New from the General Council Office:
In a statement released on Feb.27th, the Moderator of The United Church of Canada, the Right Rev. Gary Paterson, welcomed the Supreme Court ruling, in the appeal between the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission and William Whatcott that says there are limits to freedom of religion when it comes to hate speech. “Freedom of religion is not absolute,” says Paterson. “It does not include the right to engage in religiously motivated hate speech, and it does not extend to conduct that harms or interferes with the rights of others.”
Minute for Mission: Water is a resource that many in Canada take for granted. Karen and Bill Butt served as overseas personnel with the church in Mozambique where two thirds of rural people do not have access to safe clean water. Working in partnership with the Christian Council of Mozambique, the United Church has been able to help communities in the Zambezi River basin dig wells. The UC believes that water is a sacred resource that God intends for all. Let us pray for those without clean water, in Mozambique or everywhere. Gifts to the Mission and Service fund help to transform lives. Give generously.
